> Among the fourteen sections explaining the Gāthās of Meaning on Real Entity, the above five sections have already concluded; this fascicle contains the following eight complete sections, as well as a small portion of the fourteenth section. Here, the initial explanation of Classes has three verses: the first verse is a question, and the remaining two verses are the answer. Within the question there are five points: 1. encouraging superior rebirth; 2. opening the path of deliverance; 3. under which teacher one trains; 4. abiding in which Dharma one trains; 5. not fearing death later on. Within the answer, the first one and a half verses answer the first two questions, indicating the possession of nine virtues: being an eminent person, one is able to encourage superior rebirth and open the path of deliverance; the latter half verse answers the remaining three questions. "By Dharma" means reason; "by righteousness" means conforming to benefit; "by sequential restraint" means standards; "by guidance" means encouragement. Furthermore, "by Dharma" means teaching; "by righteousness" means principle; "by restraint" means subduing by means of this teaching and principle; "by guidance" means instructing and showing, not punishing by awe and severity. "That is, through the power of causes" refers to generosity. "Power of manly effort" refers to truthfulness. "Power of companions" refers to wisdom and relinquishment. "What is the spring? It refers to the six contact bases": the six bases are like a spring and the afflictions are like water, as they flow forth from the spring. "Or subsumed under peaceful reception and sensation": "peaceful reception" refers to joy (prīti); "subsumed under sensation" refers to pleasure (sukha). Another explanation: gladdening the mind is called peaceful reception; bringing comfort to the body is called subsumed under sensation. Non-peace is the reverse of this.
