> Regarding the treatise's statement, "either identical to it, different from it, or not so": "either identical to it" refers to fire and the like having warmth as its characteristic—the self-nature of fire; "different from it" refers to the function of fire being its ability to burn; "or not so" refers to taking the characteristic of blazing brightness and the like as being fire. Furthermore, "either identical to it" means that fire has warmth as its nature; "different from it" means taking blazing flame, which is a characteristic distinct from the substance of fire, as fire; "or not so" means that it is not that warmth is not fire.
