> The treatise, explaining the fourth dhyāna, states: "Furthermore, because the types and force of the antidotes here are similar, the antidote that abandons pleasure is briefly not stated; only the abandonment of pleasure effected by the antidote is spoken of." Here, equanimity, mindfulness, and correct knowledge are called the antidotes; the pleasure of the third dhyāna is called that which is countered. In the sūtras only the abandoned pleasure is stated, without mentioning the capable abandoners—equanimity, mindfulness, and correct knowledge—because the third dhyāna has already explained the antidotal dharmas of equanimity, mindfulness, and so forth, and these are similar to the antidotal dharmas of this fourth dhyāna; hence they are termed "types." Their names and essences are similar, so it says "types." Both can eliminate defilements, being similar in both places, so it says "their force is similar." "Briefly not stated": this explains the reason why the sūtra does not explicitly elucidate the antidotes of the fourth dhyāna.
