> Where the treatise explains detachment, it says the initial path of abandonment arises. The question is asked: like the two ends of a balance scale where the dipping and rising are simultaneous, why is it that upon attaining the \[manaskāra of\] discerning characteristics, the mind of the form realm still has desire-realm afflictions that are not yet eliminated? It is explained: prior to discerning characteristics, although hearing and contemplation in the desire realm generate revulsion toward desire, they cannot accord with severing the afflictions of the lower realm; discerning characteristics and resolute faith can accord with detachment and sever desire of the lower realm; therefore, although discerning characteristics and resolute faith cannot sever afflictions, afflictions do not arise. Just as a person of the first fruit has not yet detached from desire through cultivation but attains the threshold stage (anāgamya), so too at this time with discerning characteristics: without yet having detached from the lower-grade afflictions and so forth, one attains discerning characteristics; when discerning characteristics arises, secondary afflictions do not arise, just as when a wholesome mind arises, an unwholesome mind does not arise—it does not arise not because of being severed. With the manaskāra of detachment, it does not arise because of being severed. In the first two manaskāras, they are therefore not yet severed; in the first two stages, desire and evil may intermittently arise.
