### [10.167](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.10.167)

> The Commentary states: In terms of intrinsic nature, support, primary cause, intentional object, cognitive aspect, sustaining support, accompaniment, and so forth, altogether sixteen gates are used to explain the three wisdoms. Aside from the first, which explains intrinsic nature, the remaining fifteen gates explain them. As for intrinsic nature, that text states that the nature of non-conceptual wisdom is defined by being free from five kinds of marks: 1. free from non-mental-application, because deep sleep, intoxication, and so on are not that wisdom; 2. free from stages with examination and investigation, because stages from the second dhyāna upward are not that; 3. free from the quietude of the cessation of ideation and feeling, because then wisdom is not established, as the samāpatti is devoid of mind and so on; 4. like the intrinsic nature of matter, it would not be wisdom, as in the case of the great elements; 5. free from false conceptualization regarding true meaning, because conceptualization is conceptual and not non-conceptual. As for support: if the support of wisdom is mind, mind is discursive reflection, and saying that wisdom is non-conceptual would not be reasonable; if its support is not mind, that the supported is called wisdom would also not be reasonable. Thus the support of wisdom is neither mind nor non-mind: because the support is of the category of mind and is produced by mind, it is mind; because it is not discursive reflection, it is not mind. Therefore its verse says, "It is not mind and yet is mind," and so on. As for primary cause, its verse says: "The primary cause of the bodhisattvas has the verbal hearing-vāsanā," and so forth; that is, it takes hearing-vāsanā as its primary cause. As for intentional object, its verse says: "The intentional object of the bodhisattvas is the ineffable dharmatā"; that is tathatā. Dharmas of conceptualized nature are all ineffable. The ineffable nature refers to the tathatā revealed by the two kinds of selflessness; this is the intentional object of non-conceptual wisdom, which is the intentional object of all three kinds of non-conceptual wisdom. As for "practice", it means cognitive aspect. Its verse states: "The cognitive aspect of the bodhisattvas, furthermore, with respect to the intentional object, is non-conceptual wisdom; with respect to the knowable, it is signless." That is, when this wisdom is directed toward its intentional object, what appears is signless; the two conditions of grasper and grasped are completely equal, arising without different marks, just as the eye apprehending form sees the mark of blue and so on, without this mark of blue being different from form. Here, five gates are briefly cited for now; the remaining eleven gates are as explained in that treatise. This completes the first gate setting out the essences and names.
