> The Commentary states: Furthermore, this one conjoined with the sixth consciousness is coarse, and that one conjoined with the seventh consciousness is subtle. 'Their subdual has a before and an after': the coarse is subdued first, and the subtle is subdued later; therefore, this is associated only with the sixth consciousness. The Saṃdhinirmocana, fascicle 78 \[of the Yogācārabhūmi\], and others state: 'World-Honoured One! How many affliction anuśayas are there across these grounds? Good son! There are three: first, harming the companion, meaning that in the first five grounds, the non-innate actively manifesting afflictions are companions to the active manifestation of innate afflictions, and at that time they never exist again, which is called the anuśaya of harming the companion; second, debilitated, meaning that in the sixth and seventh grounds, subtle active manifestations do not actively manifest if subdued by cultivation; third, subtle, meaning that in the eighth ground and above, from here on all afflictions no longer actively manifest, and only the cognitive obstructions, which are their support, remain.' Therefore, we know that what is subdued is the sixth, not the seventh. Question: Raising a point within the discussion, how does it harm the companion? This has already been extensively explained in the chapter on severing obstructions.
