> Question: If so, upon departing from this ground one should immediately sever the seventh \[consciousness\], because of the nine grades. Answer: That is not so. Just as the cognitive hindrances severed across the ten grounds of a bodhisattva are severed across each and every ground throughout the three realms, how could they not have multiple grades? Furthermore, just as a bodhisattva born into higher \[realms\] does not sever the lower defilements since they do not obstruct that \[higher state\], this case should be by analogy the same: not obstructing the \[stage of\] learning, even though one departs from this ground, it cannot be severed; only upon reaching the \[stage of\] no-further-learning does one subsequently sever the lower ones.
