### [3.228](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.3.228)

> The Commentary states: As spoken in the tenth fascicle of the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, the meaning of this verse is: because external objects do not exist, there is only one mind; due to grasping, it operates resembling external objects; external objects are definitively non-existent, and one's own mind is admitted to exist; because they are not separate from mind, they are collectively termed a single consciousness. Caitasikas are associated with the mind, material phenomena are transformations of the mind, tathatā is the real nature of consciousness, and the four parts are functional divisions of consciousness. Each of these four categories has its distinct meaning, yet none is separate from consciousness; hence they are all termed 'only'. Untainted seeds possess only one meaning, namely being not separate from consciousness, and are therefore called 'only'. An older translation of the verse states: 'Falsely grasping one's own mind, / therefore the mind appears; / external phenomena cannot be seen, / therefore, mind-only is spoken of.'
