- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.99](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.3.99)

> The Commentary states: Neither preceding and succeeding moments nor another's body can perfume one's own consciousness, because they are not harmoniously associated. Harmonious association is an alternative name for 'concomitance' (samprayukta), just as 'to be produced' is called 'to arise,' \[where\] active manifestation produces seeds. If one speaks of different times, how can this be explained? In a sentient being lacking the \[enlightenment-\]nature, this seventh consciousness never ever undergoes modification; lacking the third \[meaning\] of having increase and decrease, it should not be capable of perfuming. There are two explanations of this. One says: This is also not the case; from beginningless time self-grasping has been increasing, and moment by moment active manifestations and seeds increase; it is not that they do not increase. Just as wrong views and so forth, though spoken of as a single grade, also have differences; hence they are fully endowed with the four meanings. Like non-conceptual wisdom, after entering the path of seeing it gradually increases; it is not that an increase in substantial magnitude is called increase, but merely that it becomes increasingly clear and keen. This is also like that: from beginningless time its cognitive appearance becomes increasingly dark, and grasping firmly it does not let go; therefore it is called an increase. However, this is extremely difficult. The second says: It also has increase and decrease; it is coarse in the desire realm, and up to subtle in \[the sphere of\] neither conceptualization nor non-conceptualization; with the differences tied to the \[various\] grounds, the coarseness and subtlety are not the same, and when born into lower or higher \[realms\] there are also changes, because there are increase and decrease.
