- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.101](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.4.101)

> The Commentary states: This explains it with three meanings; the Mahāyānasaṃgraha has two, lacking the first \[concerning\] seeds. In reference to seeds, it is called 'holding fast' (zhichi), keeping seeds from being lost, since there is no sensation. Material sense faculties and their bases are called 'appropriating' (zhishou), keeping the faculties from decaying and generating sensation. Taking initial conception and subsequent continuity of life is called 'grasping' (zhiqu), grasping various existences. Or, serving as the support of seeds and grasping them as an object is called 'holding fast'; grasping material sense faculties and so on to give rise to sensation is called 'appropriating'; and subsuming the initial conception of life is called 'grasping'. In reference to external bases, it is not called ādāna, as it lacks the meanings of holding fast, etc. This explains the meaning of ādāna ('holding fast'), while the meaning of vijñāna ('consciousness') is as usual. The previous, middle, and subsequent verses all do not explain 'consciousness'; possessing these three meanings, this consciousness is called ādāna, concluding the upper four characters of the first line, then taking up the fourth character 'consciousness' and concluding the upper three characters.
