### [5.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.5.13)

> The Commentary states: Below is the specific refutation, which has four parts: 1. refuting the five consciousnesses; 2. refuting the sixth; 3. refuting the manas; 4. refuting the eighth. In refuting the five consciousnesses, first there is a concession, followed by a retraction; this is the concession. The former master held that the five consciousnesses arise for only a single thought-moment; now this is refuted first, hence it says 'first, as for the previous five kinds of consciousnesses,' etc. This means that the five consciousnesses have three states in which, for the most part, they can arise for one moment: 1. the state of non-mastery; 2. the state of hastily encountering an object; 3. the state of encountering an ordinary object. The term 'state' in the first applies to the latter two places; the term 'encountering' in the second runs through the third; the term 'object' in the last also applies to the second. If in these three states, it may be as you say; but outside these three states, in other cases, they should continue in succession.
