- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [6.167](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.6.167)

> The Commentary states: These five are all absent \[in the five consciousnesses\]. The five consciousnesses arise by taking as object phenomena already obtained in the present; because they apprehend spontaneously, they lack desire. Desire arises through attention wishing for an unobtained object; therefore the five consciousnesses lack it. The five consciousnesses apprehend objects spontaneously, whereas resolve involves deliberate determination and endorsement; therefore the five lack resolve. The five consciousnesses continually take new objects moment by moment, and do not arise by taking past, old objects as object; they have no reminiscence, and therefore lack mindfulness. As stated at the end of the first fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya, the five consciousnesses are by nature distracted and dynamic, lacking exclusive focus; therefore they lack concentration. The five consciousnesses cannot infer and have no discernment; therefore they lack discernment. This master considers the divine eye and divine ear superknowledges to be discernment associated with mental consciousness; the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, relying on the mental consciousness that operates simultaneously with the eye and ear consciousnesses, speaks of its associated wisdom as the nature of the superknowledge. The later master, by contrast, holds that those two consciousnesses are the support and wisdom is that which is supported, and thus \[holds that\] they possess discernment.
