- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.43](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.8.43)

> The Commentary states: This means that phenomena of the three natures are also open to being untainted. Conditioning factors of both actual activity and seeds can comply with superior grades of phenomena of the same category. The words 'same category' exclude different categories from being the cause, referring solely to their own nature. However, the words 'superior grades' exclude acting as a cause for an inferior grade of one's own category. Fascicle 5 and other passages of the Great Treatise (\*Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra\*) say: 'The indeterminate acts as a cause for the wholesome and defiled.' This refers to their respective individual seeds in the root consciousness; yet with respect to actual activity, their nature is also the same. That is, it also acts as a cause for nirvāṇa, as in the Great Treatise and elsewhere. Actual activity inducing seeds, seeds inducing actual activity, actual activity inducing actual activity, and seeds inducing seeds—all are this cause. Discussing this in terms of nature, it is narrow; discussing this in terms of realm, it is broad, according to the case. Treatises such as the \*Prakaraṇāryavācā\* state: 'Phenomena of the desire realm act as causes for the three realms and the untainted; phenomena of the form realm act as causes for untainted phenomena of the form and formless realms; phenomena of the formless realm act as causes for the formless realm and the untainted; untainted phenomena act as causes for untainted phenomena.' They do not speak of them acting as causes for lower phenomena. When looking from the result toward its own category, its nature must be the same, but its attachment to realms may differ.
