> The Commentary states: Next, explaining the name 'aids to liberation' (mokṣabhāgīya): diligently seeking liberation for the sake of sentient beings, it is the cause in relation to nirvāṇa. Nirvāṇa is called liberation, as commonly discussed. Diligently seeking that, this practice does not contravene it; hence it is called 'according with' (anukūla). A 'portion' (bhāga) means a cause, or a branch (aṅga). When 'portion' is spoken of in 'aids to decision' (nirvedhabhāgīya), decision itself is the portion, which is the awakening-factor of dharma-investigation (dharma-pravicaya-saṃbodhyaṅga). 'Portion' has the meaning of a limb or component; because it accords with that portion of decision, it is called aids to decision. Now, when 'portion' is spoken of here, it has the meaning of a causal branch: it is the cause of liberation, a single branch of the cause; hence it is called a 'portion'. That is, the very entity that accords is the portion; according with that portion of liberation, it is called 'aids to liberation'. This is based on other-benefit as the cause: it is for the sake of crossing over sentient beings that one seeks liberation. Now, in seeking bodhi, the meaning of other-benefit is obvious, while in diligently advancing toward liberation, the meaning of self-benefit is prominent; yet regarding bodhi there is discussion of self-benefit, and to nirvāṇa is assigned the meaning of other-benefit, because one wishes by the former to show that this bodhi also benefits sentient beings, and by the latter to show that that nirvāṇa can also benefit oneself; the texts reflect each other here, and the meaning runs through both. Question: Why is it that in 'aids to liberation' the 'portion' is itself what accords, whereas in 'aids to decision' the entity of the 'portion' is not what accords? Answer: The entity of decision is conditioned (saṃskṛta); decision can itself be a portion, because its entity has many portions. The entity of nirvāṇa is unconditioned (asaṃskṛta); that liberation is not a portion, because its entity is neither one nor many. Another explanation: 'liberation' refers to the mental factor of resolute belief (adhimokṣa); taking liberation from the suffering of saṃsāra as its object, it is called liberation. In the causal stage, taking its name from determining the object, it is called resolute belief. In the fruit, being the cause that emerges from suffering, it is called liberation. If according to this explanation, liberation is itself the portion, and it is called a liberation-portion; the meaning of portion is not what accords, the same as aids to decision. However, that is named in relation to wisdom (prajñā), while this is designated in relation to resolute belief (adhimokṣa). If we adopt this explanation, there is no previous objection. Although the boundaries of the entity of the stage have been set forth above and the two different names of the stage have been explained, this concludes the general explanation of the stage of provisions. This explains the initial gradual stage at the time of gradually awakening to and entering consciousness-only.
