> The Commentary states: Because of this circumstance, the active operation of the two graspings acts as the perfuming agent that induces anuśayas; there is not yet the power capable of subjugating and eliminating these two anuśayas so as to make them not give rise to the active operation of the two graspings. Question: The tenth fascicle of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, in explaining the bodhisattvas of the ten abodes, states: 'Eradicating all afflictions, / perpetually exhausted without remainder; / unobstructed, tranquil contemplation: / this is the true Dharma of the Buddha.' Why does it say here that they have 'not subjugated the two graspings'? Answer: That \[sūtra passage\] is stated in terms of exhausting the unshared ignorance and accompanying categories of affliction arisen from reliance upon false teachings and false teachers; it is not the exhaustion of all afflictions born from one's own discrimination and innate afflictions. Furthermore, it speaks of the power of the Buddha's Dharma being able to eliminate all afflictions, not that the stage of the ten abodes is already able to eliminate all afflictions. Below in the text of this treatise, within the path of equipment, although they gradually subjugate and eliminate the two conceptual graspings, they have not yet completely subjugated them. The Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra says: 'Concerning unflagging pṛthagjanas within the inner teaching, I do not speak of \[them performing\] formations conditioned by ignorance' because, with respect to the unshared and associated ignorance born of their own discrimination, \[those of\] the path of seeing and so forth can be subjugated in this stage. What is spoken of here as not subjugated refers to that arisen due to false teachings and the innate, etc., discussed as a whole category. Furthermore, it is only a general statement: \[because\] for the most part they are unable, it is called 'not yet subjugated'; it is not that they have not subjugated even a small portion. The text of the treatise below says: only upon reaching the stage of applied practice are they first able to subjugate the two conceptual graspings; because those \[graspings\] caused by false teachings also arise in the stage of equipment. The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states that bodhisattvas of resolute practice, losing mindfulness in three places, still give rise to afflictions, or at times abandon the precepts, and the dharmas they expound are like shooting in the dark, either hitting or missing; therefore, in this stage, afflictions born of one's own discrimination are not yet exhausted. This directly explains the lower two lines of the verse.
