- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [9.422](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1830.9.422)

> The Commentary states: Because they lack discriminative conceptualization, dharmic views, doubt, and so forth are definitely not associated \[with them\]. 'And so forth' includes the secondary afflictions that do not arise together with these five consciousnesses—namely, all ten such as anger, and a minor part of the remaining ten. Those generated by discriminative conceptualization are absent from all five consciousnesses. 'Lacking discrimination' does not mean that they lack the afflictions severed in the path of seeing; it is merely that within the path of seeing they lack afflictions that discriminate of their own accord through relying on evil friends or teachers, but in reality they are not devoid of the afflictions severed in the path of seeing that are induced by the mental consciousness, hence they are termed 'non-discriminative'. The Abhidharma-samuccaya and other texts state: 'Those that arise through discrimination are severed in the path of seeing.' Since it is accepted that afflictions in the five consciousnesses are severed in the path of seeing, there are discriminative afflictions, yet they do not arise by their own power, because they are induced by the mind. Therefore the treatise says: 'The rest can all be induced by the power of the mind.' 'The rest' refers to the rest besides views, doubt, and so forth. The Fodi lun says: 'Although the five consciousnesses lack views and so forth, induced by the mental consciousness, attachment, anger, and so forth that are not subsumed under views arise and are subsumed under the two obstacles.' What is meant here adds to what is left over from those afflictions that discriminate by their own power, in order to refute the heterodox imputation that the afflictions in the five consciousnesses are severed solely in the path of cultivation.
