> The Commentary states: Herein there are two parts: first, distinguishing the resembling path of seeing of mental aspect (ākāra); second, distinguishing the resembling path of seeing of verbal teaching. In the first there are two parts: first, distinguishing the three minds; next, distinguishing the sixteen minds. This is the first. 'Internally dispelling' means that it only takes the internal body as object to dispel what is provisional. 'The provisionality of sentient beings' means that first one understands that sentient beings are all falsely conceptualized, and there is only the internal mind manifesting like sentient beings; speaking of their lack of essence, they are called 'provisional'. 'Cognizing wisdom' refers to the cognizing mind, that is, the cognizing wisdom that takes the internal body as its sphere to dispel the provisionality of sentient beings; the rest below are to be understood accordingly. But now, in this context, the two obstructions of person and dharma are each divided into higher and lower: the coarse are the higher and the subtle are the lower, combining to make four classes. However, the two coarse ones are separately eliminated because wisdom is still weak and cannot yet sever both together. Only when wisdom is of the superior grade can it sever both together; this is described as soft and so forth in accordance with wisdom. When it first arises, it is called soft; the next wisdom is called medium, being superior to the previous inferior one; the later arising is called superior, because in severing the afflictions of view, this wisdom is the most superior. Thus, the three grades are spoken of in accordance with wisdom regarding the afflictions. However, the first two wisdoms are not yet eminent, merely cognizing the internal body to eliminate the provisionality of self and dharmas. At the time of the third mind, its wisdom is of the superior grade, able to broadly cognize all internal and external self and dharmas; hence the three are distinct. This explains the meaning of the three-mind true path of seeing. If one speaks of 'modeling' (假/法), it is because it models the true seeing that there is a distinction: the previous two wisdoms are inferior and cannot broadly model, whereas the third wisdom is superior and can broadly model. This is first spoken of generally as the resembling path of seeing. That the contemplation of the unestablished truth has minds of three grades is because fascicle fifty-five speaks of the three minds cognizing the unestablished. Furthermore, in terms of certainty, in the resembling path of seeing there are definitely three minds.
