> Or it is divided into three: namely, characteristics, nature, and stages. The first twenty-four verses clarify the characteristics of consciousness-only; the next one verse clarifies the nature of consciousness-only; the final five verses clarify the stages of consciousness-only. In the first part there are two: 1. designation; 2. explanation. That is to say, the first verse and a half briefly resolves objections so as to designate the central theme; the subsequent twenty-two and a half verses broadly explain in accordance with what was designated. In the broad \[explanation\] there are three: first, broadly explaining the substance of the three transforming \[consciousnesses\]; second, broadly explaining what is transformed based on consciousness; third, broadly explaining the statement "due to metaphorical designation".
