> This has two meanings: first, in terms of before and after; second, in terms of categories of meaning. In terms of before and after, there are also two meanings: first, teaching the emptiness of persons; next, teaching the emptiness of dharmas. Second: first, teaching the emptiness of persons secretly expounds the existence of dharmas; next, teaching the emptiness of dharmas secretly expounds the non-existence of dharmas; only at the end is it clearly revealed that the grasped objects of the two clingings to person and dharmas do not exist, and that if one is free from the two clingings, the ultimate and the conventional are not non-existent. Therefore, the sūtra says: 'Conditioned and unconditioned are called existent; the self and what belongs to the self are spoken of as empty.'
