> Furthermore, the Anantamukhanirhāra-sūtra says: 'Able with a single voice to respond universally to all sounds.' This is solely phrasing. Again, as the Vibhāṣā, fascicle seventy-three, says: 'The single voice is the voice of Brahmā. If a person of Cīna comes and sits in the assembly, he thinks the Buddha is speaking the phrasing and meaning of Cīna for him.' This applies to both doctrine and phrasing. It also says: 'When one of greedy conduct comes and sits in the assembly, he hears the Buddha speak the contemplation of impurity and so forth for him.' This is solely doctrine. Although each has its meaning, here we merely distinguish the single voice, not speaking of the rest. Question: Appearing in accordance with those who can hear, the sounds each differ; if in terms of what is expressed, the dharmas each differ; why is it called 'a single voice'?
