- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.79](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1832.1.79)

> The first two characters of the opening verse, "jishou" (稽首, bowing with the head to the ground), distinguish the characteristics of the capability to take refuge and pay homage, as extensively described in the \*Fayuan\*. First, to explain the terms, one explanation says: "Ji" (稽) was written as 𮩡 in ancient script, and is distinguished today as 稽. The \*Baihu tong\* states: "𮩡 means to reach (至). Shou (首) means the head." It means the inferior prostrating to the superior, with the head reaching the ground. Furthermore, Zheng Xuan says: "Ji (稽) means to detain (稽). With the head reaching the ground, one detains it for a brief time."
