> The Śāstra states: "Because they definitely do not retrogress to arise afflictive hindrances." As for the stages before and after retrogression to arise afflictions, the various schools explain it differently: according to the Mahāsāṃghika and others, there are those who retrogress from the afflictions of the path of seeing, because it is a single path, but on the path of cultivation there is definitely no retrogression, because it is a dual path; according to the Sarvāstivāda, there is definitely no retrogression from the afflictions of the path of seeing because it is a swift path, whereas there is retrogression on the path of cultivation because it is leisurely. However, regarding the delusions of the path of cultivation, those who first abandon them through the six mental practices and later become noble ones of the eight \[stages\] definitely do not retrogress: first, because they have sharp faculties; second, because they abandon them by both the worldly and world-transcending paths. Moreover, if they pass through another life, they likewise do not retrogress. According to the Mahāyāna school, there is no retrogression in either case, because their seeds have been eternally severed, and past and future do not \[truly\] exist. However, when the Mahāyāna speaks of retrogression, it is retrogressing from and losing worldly dwelling in happiness in the present life. When the Hīnayāna speaks of retrogression, it is retrogressing from and losing the noble fruition, but they are certain to regain that fruition in this very life and definitely do not pass through another life. Now, concerning the nature of retrogression, it extends to noble ones of the three realms; but if one actually retrogresses, it occurs only in the human realm, because the conditions for retrogression are found there. There are five conditions for retrogression: first, affairs of the Saṅgha; second, resolving disputes; third, long-distance travel; fourth, frequent sickness; fifth, delighting in reciting scriptures.
