> Question: If modesty (hrī) and bashfulness (apatrāpya) are taken as the essences of shame and embarrassment, one essence divided by conceptual differentiation would become nominal (prajñaptisat); if fundamental and subsequent graspings are both identical to discernment (prajñā), one essence differentiated by function should not be real (dravyasat); and in the first two dhyānas, the mind being termed joy and pleasure—is it also questioned in this way? Answer: Concurrently relying on a single discernment, they are not separately established; being differentiated according to meaning and function, they are real. Since shame and embarrassment are of identical essence yet separately established, like forgetfulness (muṣitasmṛtitā) and so forth, they should be nominal.
