Following this, completion cannot extend to the lower \[stages\]; hence we know that the intermediate dhyāna cannot have the completion of the three vehicles, though the preparatory stages may all be based on it. For when entering the path of seeing, fascicles 71 and 69 speak only of the five bases, not of the intermediate stage. As for Ximing and the Yaoji both allowing reliance \[on the intermediate stage\], they contradict the text and offer their own opinions. Ximing cites fascicle 100 of the Yogācārabhūmi: "Furthermore, there are nine bases capable of exhausting all outflows, namely: the unarrived (anāgamya), the intermediate, the four dhyānas, and the three formless \[absorptions\]. They are capable of arising to sever afflictions and capable of generating roots of goodness.
