> The structural analysis of sūtras and treatises originated in the Western Regions. It is broadly divided into three parts, and divisions of upper and lower parts also exist. For instance, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa also clarifies three divisions, namely the preface, the main body, and the dissemination. In the Buddhabhūmy-upadeśa there are also three divisions: first, the section on the causes and conditions for the arising of the teaching; second, the section on the correct exposition of the holy teaching; third, the section on practicing in accordance with the teaching. The rest are as in the Shuyao. In this land, structural analysis and commentary were initiated by Master Dao'an, and subsequent virtuous masters followed and adopted it. Master Dao'an analyzed various sūtras and treatises according to principle, mostly into three divisions: preface, main body, and dissemination. It is extensively clarified in the Fahua sheshi.
