> Now, the restriction by perceptual fields of the faculties and consciousnesses that are able to illuminate them has many variations. Therefore, the Prajñaptiśāstra states: Some eyes are restricted by water but not by land, such as the eyes of fish; some eyes are restricted by land but not by water, generally speaking, such as the eyes of humans; some eyes are restricted by both, such as the eyes of piśācas, śiśumāra, and so on; some eyes are restricted by neither, namely, apart from the former forms; some eyes are restricted by night but not by day, such as the eyes of owls; some eyes are restricted by day but not by night, generally speaking, such as the eyes of humans; some eyes are restricted by both, such as the eyes of jackals; some eyes are restricted by neither, namely, apart from the former forms. Explaining the Prajñaptiśāstra: it is one of the six Pada treatises, composed by Mahākātyāyana. 'Piśāca' in Chinese means 'eater of blood and flesh,' an alternative name for a ghost. 'Śiśumāra' is a kind of animal, shaped like a gecko, the small ones being two zhang long, the large ones a hundred chi. Those 'restricted by neither' are the blind.
