Regarding those based on reasoning and investigation, according to the Mahāvibhāṣā: 'Two \[are held\] through reasoning and investigation: by falsely inferring that, since one can remember all that has been experienced in the present life, if there were a previous life one should also be able to remember what was experienced there; since one cannot remember it, one therefore knows it does not exist.'
