If one subdues eight stages, both kinds of unconditioned dharmas (asaṃskṛta) are non-analytical cessation (apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha); if one subdues five stages, only the cessation of ideation and sensation does not obtain analytical cessation (pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha), while the unconditioned \[state\] of immobility is subsumed under analytical cessation, because the afflictions of the lower four stages are all severed. The text of the Commentary is a general summary; it should be understood in this way. Some editions of the Commentary read 'one stage, five stages'; the character 'one' is an error and should be 'eight'.
