> They are enumerated fully as in the Commentary. Now, addressing difficulties, it is explained: "Embodied consciousness" is the ālaya-vijñāna; because it is that upon which the body of the five consciousnesses relies, it is called "embodied." If so, the sixth \[consciousness\] also relies on the eighth; why mention only the five? Since there is this objection, it is further explained: The eighth grasps the five faculties, and only then do the five consciousnesses arise. The five faculties are called the "body"; the consciousness that grasps the body is called "embodied consciousness." The sixth is not analogous. According to Vasubandhu's commentary, afflicted manas is taken as the embodied consciousness. "Experiencing consciousness" refers to the afflicted manas, because it is the uncommon support of the sixth \[consciousness\]. The five consciousnesses are not analogous. The consciousness of the experiencer is called the experiencing consciousness.
