- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.227](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1834.1.227)

> The commentary says: Because the various material forms are severed or do not continue, and the various functioning consciousnesses are severed or latent, only the eighth consciousness forms an uninterrupted continuum that can go from a previous life to a subsequent life, linking rebirth without interruption. The Buddha, considering this consciousness with an intentional meaning, taught that there are spontaneously born sentient beings; he did not observe a substantially real spontaneously born sentient being and then speak of it. Here he adduces what is well established \[between both parties\] to illustrate by analogy what is not well established between the two schools. Question: Why is it known that a spontaneously born being is not substantially real, but was spoken of with an intentional meaning?
