- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.247](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1834.1.247)

> The commentary says: This is also as before. The meaning here is that the seeds of the five material bases are called the internal faculties, and the cognitive objects are called the external bases. The Ālambanaparīkṣā also says: 'The function of form upon consciousness is properly called the five faculties; this function and the objective form have mutually been causes from beginningless time.' 'Function' is an alternative name for seed; it also states that the substance of the five faculties is nothing other than the seeds of consciousness. In the fourth fascicle of the Cheng weishi lun, there are briefly two explanations. One says that the five material faculties are simply the seeds of the five consciousnesses, that there are no actual eyes and so forth as co-existent faculties (sahabhū-indriya), and that it is solely one's own causal seeds that have arisen that are called the eye and so forth. It adduces this verse and the Ālambanaparīkṣā as firm proof. For the Ālambanaparīkṣā states that the seeds of the five consciousnesses upon the eighth consciousness are called the five faculties; and it also states that they and their cognitive objects can constantly be causes for each other. As for the five external objects, it is accepted that there are dependent-arising form bases, which is uncontroversial; Dignāga and others, relying on this consciousness-only doctrine, stated thus in the Ālambanaparīkṣā.
