Why is this? 'How is it that the knowledge of others' minds does not know its object as it truly is?' is the opponent's query. 'Like the knowledge knowing one's own mind' is the treatise master's resolution. Implicitly there is also: 'How does the knowledge of one's own mind not know its object as it truly is?' which the opponent pursues again. The two characters 'does not know' in the fourth line of the verse are the treatise master's reply: 'does not know' means unknowing (avidyā/ajñāna); due to unknowing, it cannot know itself. Stating generally 'it does not know as does the Buddha's sphere' demonstrates that both knowledges do not know as it truly is. However, according to the Sanskrit text, where the verse has the word 'does not know' (bùzhī), it should say 'unknowing' (wúzhī); 'does not know' and 'unknowing' answer the pursuit, and 'does not know' collectively shows the two ways of not being as it truly is. Here the text is abridged, combining them into 'does not know'.
