This is the first verse. Within the first verse, the first line refutes non-Buddhists; the lower three lines refute Hīnayāna. Within the refutation of Hīnayāna, the first line refutes the ancient Sarvāstivāda-Vaibhāṣikas; the lower two lines refute the Sautrāntikas and the Neo-Sarvāstivāda Nyāyānusāra masters. 'Nor again a combination and so forth' establishes the pratijñā; 'because paramāṇus are not established' establishes the hetu. Verifying this, it also refutes the aggregation of paramāṇus.
