> In Sanskrit it is called pudgala, translated in Chinese as 'repeatedly taking rebirth in the destinies'. It means that sentient beings repeatedly give rise to delusion and generate karma, which is the act of taking (the cause); and the five destinies of the future are called that which is taken (the fruit). Although they repeatedly give rise to delusion, generate karma, and transmigrate through the five destinies, there is entirely no master or controller with real, independent efficacy; therefore it is said to be 'selflessness'. Thus, pudgala is itself without a self. That which is negated here is the self, which is the emptiness of the self. Those ordinary beings and the like all grasp external to the mind at really existent dharmas, and further grasp that these dharmas have a real master; this is explained as non-existent, and non-existence is simply that emptiness, having no separate substance.
