> Sixth is inference (anumāna): using what is already widely acknowledged to verify what was not previously admitted, with the determination of cognition regarding common characteristics; therefore it is called inference. (The reason and example are already established, while the thesis was not previously admitted. Using a dharma already admitted to accomplish a thesis not yet admitted, just as a thread strings together flowers, the meaning of the reason universally applies; cognition of the common characteristic arises, confirming and determining the prior thesis, and conceptual understanding is born; therefore it is called inference. Even if one takes what is already admitted to accomplish a thesis not yet admitted, if the cognition that arises is undetermined, it is not subsumed under inference.)
