> Question: In the Mahāyāna, sound expresses good and evil, yet sound is indeterminate, and names, sentences, and phonemes are also indeterminate. How can the indeterminate be the essence of the sacred teaching? Answer: Because they are spoken through the subsequently attained cognition of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, they are both good. As the Daśabhūmikaśāstra says: 'Good names, words, and so forth are this.'
