- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1846.1.29)

> Seventh, regarding the explanation of the treatise's title: 'Great' takes the substance itself as its designation, having the meaning of encompassing. 'Vehicle' takes metaphor as its appellation, having the function of conveying. Uniting doctrine and metaphor, 'Mahāyāna' is the object of faith, having substance and capability as its meaning. 'Awakening faith' is the mind capable of having faith, taking clarity and purity as its nature. Uniting mind and object in the designation, it is therefore called 'Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna'. This is the awakening of faith of the Mahāyāna, which selects the mind in contrast to the object, and is not realization and so forth. It is also awakening faith in the Mahāyāna, which distinguishes the practice in contrast to the tenet, the practice not being the faith of the Hīnayāna. Furthermore, 'great' pertains to meaning, which means nothing exceeds the three greatnesses of substance, marks, and function. 'Vehicle' is explained according to function, meaning that the Buddha-nature accomplishes conveyance across the three positions: the Buddha-nature abiding in self-nature is that which is ridden; the引出 Buddha-nature that is brought forth is that which is capable of riding; and the Buddha-nature of attaining the fruit is the place to which the vehicle arrives. The substance and function of these three meanings turn only upon the One Mind; therefore it is both a vehicle and great, being a karmadhāraya compound. Moreover, according to the Abhidharmasamuccayavyākhyā: 'Because it is conjoined with seven kinds of greatness, it is therefore called the Great Vehicle. First, greatness of the object, because the bodhisattva path takes as its object the vast Dharma-teachings of hundreds of thousands of immeasurable sūtras. Second, greatness of practice, because it correctly practices all the vast practices of benefiting oneself and benefiting others. Third, greatness of cognition, because it completely understands the vast selflessness of persons and phenomena. Fourth, greatness of vigor, because across three great incalculable eons it diligently cultivates immeasurable difficult practices through skillful means. Fifth, greatness of skillful means, because it abides neither in saṃsāra nor in nirvāṇa. Sixth, greatness of attainment, because it attains the Tathāgata's dharmakāya, and immeasurable and countless great merits such as fearlessnesses and unshared qualities. Seventh, greatness of fruit, because to the limits of saṃsāra it manifests all attainments of bodhi and establishes vast Buddha-activities.' The explanation says: the first five pertain to the cause, and the latter two pertain to the fruit. The Yogācārabhūmi and the Prakaraṇāryavācā also state this. In the Mahāyānasūtrālaṅkāra: 'The sixth is named greatness of fruit, referring to attaining the dharmakāya and so forth; the seventh is named greatness of activity, referring to manifesting the attainment of bodhi and so forth.' The rest are identical to this.
