'The subtle, because it is unconjoined with the mind' means that the latter three defilements are unconjoined with the mind; lacking the coarse and prominent marks of mind and mental factors, their essence is subtle and flows constantly without interruption, which in the sūtras is called flux arising and ceasing. This relies on the four-fascicle \*Laṅkāvatāra\*. In the ten-fascicle version it says: 'There are two kinds of cessation of consciousness: first, cessation of marks; second, cessation of continuity. Arising and abiding are also like this.'
