> In \[the explanation of\] the third \[mark\], the Commentary says: "The capacity to manifest": that is, because the preceding evolving consciousness is able to manifest marks, based on this function it is named the manifesting consciousness. "Because its..." below explains its operational marks. Hence the subsequent text says: "Because there is the deluded mind, it perfumes ignorance; not understanding the dharma of tathatā, unawares, thoughts arise and manifest deluded objects." "Universally manifesting everything" refers to all saṃskṛta and asaṃskṛta, physical and mental dharmas, not solely the five sense objects. "If according to..." below cites treatises for comparative analysis. The five sense faculties are the five material sense faculties such as the eye, and the bodily bases of the faculties. Seeds are the seeds of the three natures—wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate. The receptacle world is the mountains, rivers, the great earth, and so on. These are all the objective part (nimittabhāga) of the eighth \[consciousness\]. Yet these objective parts are all appropriated and sustained by the eighth consciousness. "Appropriating" (upādāna) means gathering and holding. "Sustaining" means receiving as an object, causing conscious experiencing to arise. Among these, seeds possess all three meanings: first, gathering as its own substance; second, holding so they do not disperse; third, receiving as an object. The physical body with faculties possesses two, lacking the gathering as its own substance; hence the receptacle world has only one, as it is merely received as an object. Therefore the Vijñaptimātratā says: "The places of appropriation are unfathomable." Alternatively, seeds and the physical body with faculties are cognized and appropriated, whereas the extent of the receptacle world is only cognized and not appropriated.
