> "Now this..." below: someone might ask: "If so, why is it here only stated that it manifests the five sense objects?" Therefore this is explained. Because it faces the empirical consciousness that it attracts, out of all \[dharmas\], it specifically cites these five. The treatise says: "When confronted, it immediately manifests." The intent lies here. "Not like..." below interprets "always being in front" in terms of uninterrupted continuity. For instance, when the sixth consciousness is in the five mindless states, it is extinguished; hence the Vijñaptimātratā says: "The mental consciousness constantly manifests and arises, except when born into the heaven of non-conception, in the two mindless absorptions, and during deep sleep and swooning." Furthermore, when the seventh \[consciousness\] enters the cessation absorption, although it is said that its pure part is uninterrupted, there is also the statement that "the seventh is exhausted," which in terms of the defiled part also constitutes the sense of interruption. Moreover, in the Cheng weishi lun, among the four requirements of the perfumed, it says: "If a dharma is of one category and continuous from beginning to end, capable of holding vāsanā, it is that which is perfumed." This excludes the first seven evolving consciousnesses, which are like wind and sound. Since they are said to be like wind and sound, they are not continuous, because there are interruptions.
