First, directly explaining: "Stirring that ocean of mind" refers to the ocean of the ālayavijñāna mind. "Waves of consciousness" refers to the mark of cognition and so forth. Hence the sūtra states: "Stirred by the wind of cognitive objects, various waves of consciousness are produced." Therefore the treatise below states: "Because there are the conditions of defiled dharmas of deluded cognitive objects, they perfume the deluded mind, causing it to reflect, attach, and so forth." "Vāsanā of deluded thought and so forth" refers to branch avidyā. It is that which confuses the semblance for reality. When this avidyā first harmonizes with the real, it is named fundamental; when it arrives at becoming consciousness and depends upon and resides within consciousness, it shifts to be named branch; hence it is called the vāsanā of deluded thought.
