> Treatise: From "If water..." downward is the second part, specifically revealing the marks of the simile, in two parts: first, the simile for the concomitant mind.
>
> Commentary: Regarding "this shows and so forth": this accords with what was doubted, and also restates it to grant it provisionally. From "Because cognitive objects..." downward directly resolves what was doubted. Because when cognitive objects cease, although the marks of the concomitant mind cease, the essence of mind does not cease; because it does not cease, the three subtle \[marks\] continue. This is like the cessation of fierce wind causing coarse waves to cease, but not the cessation of the essence of water. However, strictly speaking, there are only two marks, because the cognitive object is the manifesting mark itself, and now it has already ceased; yet speaking of "three subtle marks" is speaking generally. From "For indeed..." downward gives the reason: because it was previously stated that the condition ceases because the cause ceases, not that the cause ceases because the condition ceases. The point is: the coarse does not encompass the subtle, so the subtle still manages to survive; how much more so does the essence of mind not perish, so why doubt complete severance? From "Because of this..." downward concludes by answering what was asked. Thus, although the marks of the concomitant mind cease along with cognitive objects, the subtle marks do not cease.
