> Treatise: "Because there is avidyā..." Second, purity perfuming defilement. Commentary: "This is..." Because arising and ceasing is the gate of gathering principle to form phenomena, where defilement and purity coexist, there is the meaning of perfuming. If it were tathatā, which is the gate that eliminates marks and reveals the nature, it would melt and merge arising and ceasing into one true essence without any counterpart, and thus would lack the meaning of perfuming. "Due to this..." When following the flow and opposing tathatā, that is the defiled function; now, through the perfuming of original enlightenment causing it to reverse and accord with the real, it is named the pure function. It is like rebels who, having already submitted, offer their loyal hearts to the sovereign: formerly they opposed him as a rebel faction, but now they accord with him as loyal ministers. "This explanation..." refers to the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra, as already cited earlier. The meaning is: the reason one can arouse revulsion \[against saṃsāra\] and seek \[nirvāṇa\] is entirely the perfuming power of tathatā. The wild bandits submitting is the transformative guidance of the enlightened ruler. "The Nirvāṇa..." cites proof. "Its words..." harmonizes that text with this one. "Truly because..." concludes by returning to the present meaning. The two meanings are enlightenment and non-enlightenment: the meaning of enlightenment is the present tathatā; non-enlightenment is the present avidyā, and avidyā fully contains the deluded mind and deluded objects. "Herein..." "Enlightenment" (jue) and "Buddha" are merely different pronunciations in Chinese and Sanskrit. Origin is paired with branch, nature is paired with marks; nature and marks, origin and branch differ in words but are identical in meaning.
