> 3. Conclusion. On the commentary's "not falling among ordinary people or the small \[vehicle\]", etc.: Thus the Daśabhūmika-śāstra says that one is caused to protect against two kinds of conduct: the conduct of defilements and the conduct of the two vehicles. If beginners hear the conduct of ordinary people condemned, they fall into the conduct of the two vehicles; if they hear the conduct of the two vehicles rebuked, they enter into the conduct of ordinary people, unwilling to practice the Middle Way. Now that their faithful mind has attained completion, they do not fall. Regarding the "lineage of habituation" (adhimukti-gotra): In the Benye jing, from cause to fruit, it is subsumed under six lineages: the lineage of habituation of the ten abodings, the lineage of nature of the ten practices, the lineage of the path of the ten dedications, the noble lineage of the ten stages, the lineage of equal enlightenment, and the lineage of wondrous enlightenment; here it is the first. Regarding "conforming to internal perfuming": Conversely, it accords with the essence and marks of tathatā. This is distinguished from the concordance (samprayukta) of the non-conceptual mind on the \[ten\] stages; because on the stages one unites with the principle, it is called concordance. Here, prior to the stages, it is called concordance merely because of following along, since the non-conceptual mind has not yet been attained. Regarding "definitely bound to attain the fruit": Because one abides in the correct cause of the fruit of Buddhahood. That is, this bodhisattva enters the group of the definitely determined and is in concordance with the correct cause of Buddhahood; having conformed to its cause, they will definitely attain the fruit. Therefore it says "entering the lineage of the Tathāgata"; "lineage" (gotra) means cause.
