"One flavor of Mahāyāna" is the true principle of the One Mind; it does not differentiate distinctions such as defiled and pure, cause and effect, ordinary being and sage, emptiness and existence, and is thus called "one flavor"; it is named Mahāyāna to distinguish it from the Two Vehicles. The essence of this dharma coincides tacitly with wisdom and is free from all conceptual differentiation, hence it is called "one flavor." If demonstrated relying on verbal explanation, it is opened into two: namely, dharma and meaning. Therefore the treatise states: "Mahāyāna, generally speaking, has two kinds: first, dharma; second, meaning." It further opens dharma into two gates, and expounds meaning into three greatnesses. Therefore the treatise states: "Relying on the dharma of the One Mind there are two gates: first, the gate of the mind as tathatā; second, the gate of the mind as arising and ceasing."
