> Under "General formulation," the Treatise says: "Whether walking..." This means that across the four postures and deportments and the six conditions, one must practice both calming and insight (śamatha and vipaśyanā) concurrently, and deploy both concentration and wisdom (samādhi and prajñā) together. The Commentary says: "Separately cultivated in movement and stillness": although it says "separately cultivated," one must train in their dual deployment, because an earlier passage states: "Although calming is first and insight is second, distinguished sequentially, when it comes to the time of practice, how could they be separated?" Because text cannot be written simultaneously, it forms an order of before and after. Now, in this passage, saying that they are "together" is also a re-explanation of the earlier text, for fear that people in practice might cultivate them each alone; thus it encourages that both calming and insight should be practiced together in all cases. Because when practiced together at the time of the cause, in the fruit they are then doubly deployed. Just as having feet but no eyes, or eyes but no feet, neither will reach the cool pond—how could a one-wheeled cart avoid overturning? Hence the sūtra says: "The mind on the causal stage and the awakening on the fruitional stage are not two and not distinct"; only then is it said that from beginning to end they are not separated.
