> Eighth, regarding the extent of the realm transformed: According to the Hīnayāna, only this Sahā defiled world is the recompense buddha-land, within which this Jambudvīpa is the basis of the recompense buddha, while the other hundreds of millions \[of worlds\] and so forth are the extent of the nirmāṇa realm. According to the initial teaching, Śākyamuni's true recompense land is in the Akaniṣṭha Heaven, while his nirmāṇakāya resides in hundreds of millions of worlds; this is because, fearing that the Hīnayāna would not believe in a true land outside the three realms, it is explained by lodging it in the supreme place within the realms. According to the final teaching, Śākyamuni's land is outside the three realms; hence the Nirvāṇa\[-sūtra\] states: 'Thirty-two Gaṅgā-sands of buddha-lands to the west of here, there is a world named Invincible, which is Śākyamuni's true recompense land'—in order to show that the body at the summit of the form realm is not real. Or the nirmāṇa realm is not merely hundreds of millions \[of worlds\], as the Dazhidulun states: 'Taking a trichiliocosm as one unit, counting up to the sands of the Gaṅgā is one world-nature; counting further up to the sands of the Gaṅgā is a world-ocean; counting further up to immeasurable sands of the Gaṅgā is a world-species; counting further up to immeasurable sands of the Gaṅgā in the ten directions is the extent transformed by a single buddha.' According to the perfect teaching, as the Lotus \[Sūtra\] says, 'I am always at Vulture Peak,' which that treatise interprets as the recompense land. According to the sudden teaching, the Nirvāṇa states: 'This present body of mine is itself the dharmakāya,' hence the land of dharmatā has no boundary. According to the distinct teaching, there are two kinds: First, the ocean of lands, which must be deemed ineffable; if revealed by lodging it in words, it is as explained at the beginning of the second assembly in the 'Chapter on Awakening through Light'. Second, the ocean of worlds, which has three types: 1. The Lotus Treasury Ocean of Worlds, possessing host and retinue and revealing the inexhaustible, which is the realm of the ten buddhas. 2. Outside the trichiliocosm, there are ten tiers of world-oceans: 1. world-nature, 2. world-ocean, 3. world-wheel, 4. world-fulfillment, 5. world-discrimination, 6. world-revolution, 7. world-turning, 8. world-lotus, 9. world-Sumeru, 10. directional world-aspects—these are the realms of wheel-turning kings with ten thousand sons or more. 3. Immeasurable diverse types of worlds all pervade the dharmadhātu; just as the quantity and limits of one type of Mount Sumeru world exhausts empty space and pervades the dharmadhātu, so too are tree-shaped worlds and the like, up to all kinds of forms, all likewise pervading the dharmadhātu without obstructing one another. The above three levels are all the places gathered and transformed by Rocana's ten bodies. Furthermore, the fundamental and the derivative are perfectly interfused and mutually contain each other without obstruction; according to each single world, these three are roughly present; therefore, it is completely different from the three vehicles.
