> "The king, knowing well his skill in physiognomy, erected palaces for \[the prince\] and constructed halls for the three seasons, each in a different location—residing in an autumn hall during the rainy season, residing in a cool hall during the hot season, and residing in a warm hall during the cold, snowy season. He selected five hundred singing-girls, choosing those who were upright and handsome, neither fat nor thin, neither tall nor short, neither fair nor dark, clever and skillful in talents, each skilled in several arts; all were adorned upon their bodies with necklaces of white pearls and famous jewels. In turns of a hundred at a time, they rotated to stand night watch. In front of the halls were planted rows of sweet fruit trees, with bathing pools between the trees, and within the pools were rare flowers and strange kinds of birds by the hundreds and thousands, adorning and pleasing the sight to delight the prince's mind, not wanting to let him study the Way. The palace walls were strong and firm, and the sound of opening and shutting the gates was made to be heard for forty li. On the day the prince was born, the king's bondservants also gave birth to male servants, the stables brought forth a white colt and a yellow kid. The servant's name was Chandaka, and the horse's name was Kaṇṭhaka. Later, the king constantly had Chandaka attend and accompany him, and provided the white horse for him to ride."
