### [2.73](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1850.2.73)

> This presents an analogy to explain and confirm it. The ocean water illustrates the tathāgatagarbha mind. The waves illustrate the front seven evolving consciousnesses. The wind illustrates the mental factor of ignorance. The moving mark of water is itself called wind; wind is not originally outside water, illustrating that the non-awakening of the mind is itself called ignorance. The mental factor of ignorance is constantly associated with the mind-king and is not outside the mind-king. However, that water has a nature that can be moved illustrates that the seeds of ignorance are stored in the eighth consciousness. That the waves have marks of moving and turning illustrates that the active manifestations of ignorance are only associated with the front seven consciousnesses. The storehouse consciousness is eternally abiding, while the evolving consciousnesses arise and cease, just as water and waves are not one. The storehouse consciousness also takes tathatā as its essence, and the evolving consciousnesses also take tathatā as their essence, just as water and waves are not different, because they share the same nature of wetness. The waves moving due to the wind, such that the entire body of water moves, illustrates that not only do the seven consciousnesses arise and cease, but even the storehouse consciousness arises and ceases. It is not the nature of water that moves, so the wet nature of the waves has never moved, illustrating that not only is the nature of the storehouse consciousness without arising and ceasing, but even the evolving consciousnesses have a nature without arising and ceasing. "If the wind ceases" illustrates ignorance turning into illumination. "The movement of the waves ceases" illustrates that the compound consciousness and the marks of the evolving consciousnesses are both extinguished, no longer acting as the object of perfuming or the perfuming agent. "The nature of water does not cease" illustrates that the eight consciousnesses are transformed into the mental states associated with the four wisdoms, identical to tathatā in eternally abiding without destruction.
