> This further matches \[the metaphor\] with doctrine. "The inherently pure mind" refers directly to the present fleeting mind-nature: its essence is tathatā, originally pure, not becoming pure only upon achieving Buddhahood. As for "stirred by the wind of ignorance," because from beginningless time \[sentient beings\] have never awakened, there are naturally the eight consciousnesses; within the eighth consciousness there are naturally the seeds of ignorance, like water holding the propensity to move. The active manifestations of the preceding seven consciousnesses are naturally associated with ignorance, like waves having the characteristic of movement. "Raising the waves of consciousness" is like the ocean's water moving in its entire substance to form waves. As for "these three things are all without physical characteristics," it is, for example, like designating that upon which the waves depend as water, designating that which arises from the water as waves, and designating the movement of the waves as wind. Outside of the water there are no separate physical characteristics of the movement of the waves; outside of the waves there are no separate physical characteristics of the water's movement; outside of the movement there are no separate physical characteristics of the waves and water. Because three things are spoken of, they are not one; because they equally rely on the nature of wetness, they are not different. Sentient beings are also like this: outside of the storehouse consciousness there are no separate physical characteristics of the transforming consciousnesses and ignorance; outside of the transforming consciousnesses there are no separate physical characteristics of the storehouse consciousness and ignorance; and outside of ignorance there are also no separate physical characteristics of the storehouse consciousness and the transforming consciousnesses. Because the eighth, the preceding seven, and the mental factors—these three things—are spoken of, they are not one; because they share the identical pure mind of tathatā, they are not different. As for "yet the inherently pure mind is the root of the moving consciousness," it is like the wet nature of water being the root of the water's waves. As for "when ignorance ceases, the moving consciousness ceases along with it," matching when the wind ceases the movement of waves ceases along with it, not only do the marks of the preceding seven \[consciousnesses\] as perfuming agents cease, but the mark of combination as the object of perfuming in the eighth \[consciousness\] also ceases. As for "the nature of wisdom is not destroyed," matching the earlier "the nature of water does not cease," not only is the nature of the great mirror wisdom not destroyed, but the natures of the wisdom of equality, marvellous contemplation, and duty-fulfillment are also not destroyed. The first section, explaining the mark of pure wisdom, is finished.
